Working Principle of Water Cooling for New Energy Vehicles

Most people are aware that the cooling system is one of the core technologies of electric vehicles. Unlike traditional fuel-powered vehicles, electric vehicles are equipped with additional high-heat-generating components (including batteries, motors, controllers, and chargers), making cooling performance particularly critical. Overheating can cause serious damage to electric vehicles. Now, let’s take a closer look at the working principle of water cooling for electric vehicles.

Currently, water cooling is a widely adopted method for cooling stator windings. Water is an excellent cooling medium, featuring high specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity, as well as the advantages of low cost, non-toxicity, non-flammability, and non-explosiveness. Components cooled by circulating water achieve remarkable cooling effects, and can withstand much higher electromagnetic loads than air-cooled components—thus improving material utilization efficiency.

This design enables heat exchange between the vehicle’s system heat and external air through the cooling system, thereby better protecting the performance and service life of the electric components in new energy vehicles. The vehicle-integrated cooling system ensures that all electric components operate within the optimal temperature range. This is especially important for power batteries, whose discharge power is significantly affected by ambient temperature. Additionally, this system can maintain a smaller temperature difference inside the power battery compared to traditional air-cooled systems.
